The First Device in the Russian Federation Capable of Detecting COVID-19 in the Air Has Been Presented at ARMY-2020
At the International Military-Technical Forum ARMY-2020 the first device in Russia capable of finding viruses in the air was presented. The device was named Detector-BIO. The head of the Department of Natural Focal Infections of the Gamaleya National Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology Artem Tkachuk told to the Zvezda TV channel more details about the device.
“This device is a whole series of development work that was started in 2015 as part of a large targeted program to ensure chemical and biological safety,” Tkachuk said.
He noted that this work was crowned by Detector-BIO.
“Detector-BIO is actually a compact laboratory in a case, the size of which can be compared with a household refrigerator, but its functionality allows it to automatically, without human intervention, collect air samples, prepare them in the right way and conduct analyzes that in terms of sensitivity and other technical characteristics are comparable to analyzes carried out in a classic large laboratory,” said the specialist.
Tkachuk noted that the device could ‘feel’ the excess of the concentration of pathogenic biological agents in the air within 10-15 seconds.
“It cannot say which pathogen it is; it can only determine if it is a virus, a bacterium, or a toxin,” the scientist added.
After that, the complex turns on and conducts a specific analysis. This takes 60 to 120 minutes. Tkachuk added that, among other things, Detector-BIO can detect the COVID-19 virus in the air.
