Plakart, a RUSNANO Portfolio Company, Protects Facilities at Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft Oil Field from Corrosion

In June 2018 specialists from Plakart were called out to apply the company’s trademark SPRAMET gasothermic protective coating to the outside of metal structures at the V. Filanovsky oil field in the Caspian Sea. The SPRAMET-300 coating was applied to the inclined section of the block supporting the conductor platform. This area of approximately 211 square metres in the splash zone (around the water line) has to bear the most aggressive impact of the harsh operating conditions created by the maritime climate. The SPRAMET-300 coating, applied in the area of the waterline (±1.5 m), will serve for more than 20 years in the conditions prevalent at the V. Filanovsky oil platform.

The conductor platform is designed to extract and sort the oil, and also to supply it to the main technological platform used during the first stage of the oil field’s development. The construction of the facility is part of the third stage of the oil field’s development, and is used to integrate the western part of the production field in the development and ensure a stable level of extraction. Plakart’s client was LLC Galaktika, the constructor of the supporting block.

Plakart replaced the existing varnish and paint coating, which did not provide reliable long-term protection against corrosion and wear in the prevailing maritime conditions: the SPRAMET-300 compound coating, based on zinc and aluminium guarantees protection from corrosion for more than 20 years. The new coating will help save the client several tens of millions of roubles, as, since the block is in permanent contact with sea water, it is both expensive and useless to replace the paint/ varnish every year.

The SPRAMET-300 coating is made up of a matrix of zinc and aluminium formed by means of a gasothermic spraying process. The metallic matrix is then treated by painting with a special substance that soaks into the matrix. The resulting coating is then painted in the colour specified in the project description. SPRAMET-300 is three to five times more durable than other varnish and paint coatings and can protect a structure from corrosion for up to 20-50 years. The coating can increase the reliability of constructions such as offshore ice-resistant oil platforms, deck structures, communications masts, helipads etc.

The V. Filanovsky oil field, the largest in the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea, was opened by LUKOIL in 2005. When extraction started, the field contained reserves of 129 mln tonnes of oil and 30 bln cubic metres of gas. The target extraction rate is 6 mln tonnes of oil a year. Industrial-scale extraction started on October 31, 2016, when the first stage of the oil field’s development was put into operation.
