RUSNANO and KAMAZ Sign Strategic Partnership Agreement
RUSNANO and KAMAZ PJSC have signed a strategic partnership agreement in connection with the planned development and production of batteries for electric vehicles and also of stationary appliances using rechargeable lithium-ion cells. The document establishes a basis for the implementation of joint projects to build up the manufacture of electric vehicles in Russia and develop power storage systems based on rechargeable lithium-ion cells. It takes the partnership between the two companies to a new, global level.

The agreement was signed by Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the Executive Board of RUSNANO Management Company, and Sergey Kogogin, General Director of KAMAZ PJSC. The signed agreement grants KAMAZ special terms when purchasing rechargeable lithium-ion cells from Liotech-Innovations Ltd., one of RUSNANO’s portfolio companies. The volume of rechargeable lithium-ion cells to be delivered to KAMAZ’s assembly shops and its components manufacturers will be determined at a later date, and will depend on the customer’s requirements. The partners also plan to develop, test and launch the mass production of efficient rechargeable power cells, modules and traction batteries for various types of electric buses (with dynamic, night-time and ultra-fast charging regimes) and for other types of electric vehicles, including both models currently manufactured by KAMAZ and planned new models.
Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the Executive Board of RUSNANO Management Company, commented on the agreement: ”The partnership with KAMAZ is the first step in Liotech’s transition from a manufacturer of lithium-ion cells to an OEM that supplies rechargeable batteries. This transition is consistent with global practice in the area of power storage solutions, and is a sign that Russian customers are starting to use lithium-ion power storage devices on a large scale. This agreement will help Liotech, one of our portfolio companies, to plan its range more effectively and offer KAMAZ products and technologies that better suit its needs. Every day, in countries around the world, hundreds of thousands of electric buses are launched on public transport routes, and the electric vehicle market is now worth several billion dollars. We see it as inevitable that Russia will also follow this trend towards the use of electric vehicles. This partnership with the largest Russian manufacturer of freight and passenger vehicles will enable RUSNANO to develop economically viable ready solutions that satisfy the needs of urban transport systems.”
”The power storage system accounts for about 30% of the cost of an electric bus. Therefore the transition to Russian lithium-ion power storage devices will enable significant reductions in the cost of electric buses, and will help us minimise dependence on imported parts, which will be one more step forward in our company’s move to replace imports with domestic production,” said Sergey Kogogin, General Director of KAMAZ PJSC.
Under their agreement, RUSNANO and KAMAZ will also draw up joint proposals to strengthen state support for the development of the Russian market for electric vehicles which use domestically-produced lithium-ion power storage devices, in various regions of the Russian Federation. The partners will also draw up initiatives to be included in the regional programmes for public transport development, aimed at the creation of environmentally clean and convenient public transport fleets which meet all internationally-accepted transport safety standards. The adoption of a comprehensive approach to the evaluation of transport systems will make it possible to choose the optimal charging technologies, and the right combination of such technologies, for use in large cities.

Work to establish nanotechnology infrastructure and carry out educational programs is fulfilled by RUSNANO’s Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, which was also established during the reorganization of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies.
