Profotech Installs Modern Current Measurement Systems at Kazakhstan Electrolysis Plant (KEP)

The Rusnano Portfolio company Profotech has successfully completed a project to replace the current measurement systems in the aluminum pot rooms at Kazakhstan Electrolysis Plant (KEP, ERG group) in Pavlodar, Kazakhstan. The project was completed, with the facility ready to operate within five months, and included the production of the main measurement equipment, its delivery, installation and commissioning.

The current measurement system installed in the project is based on optoelectronic current transformers. Optical transformers are designed to measure direct current without distortion and to the highest degree of accuracy, at rated current levels of up to 400 kA, within a wide temperature range and in conditions of strong magnetic interference. The power equipment is designed to be operated in hazardous production facilities as well as in the construction of technical and commercial electric power metering systems and in safety and automation systems in electric substations and power generation facilities.

The project at KEP was carried out by Profotech in cooperation with Elster Metronica LLC (a member of the Honeywell Group). The project involved the supply of a set of the devices included in the measurement system, and integrating them into the plant’s automated technological process management systems. The technical staff of Elster Metronica LLC ensured the integration of the direct current measurement system with the Alfa CENTER energy metering system and with the customer’s SCADA system.

The partners’ combined experience and skills enabled them to create a new functional system for KEZ within the set deadlines, namely, a precise technological subassembly electric power metering system, with remote control of the optical measurement devices by Profotech JSC. The optical measurement system replaced the previous system, based on Hall sensors, which was less reliable and not accurate enough.
