Ulyanovsk-based Vestas and RUSNANO Joint Venture Delivers Blades for 100 Wind Turbines
The Ulyanovsk-based Vestas Manufacturing RUS plant (a RUSNANO portfolio company) has dispatched its 100th set of blades for wind turbines since its launch. The innovative equipment components are to be sent to a wind farm in the Astrakhan Oblast.
Since the beginning of 2019, the plant, which became Russia’s first producer to use this innovative product manufacturing process, has delivered 300 composite blades to Russian and foreign wind farms. These new components have been used to install 100 Vestas wind turbines, with a total capacity of approximately 400 MW. The low-carbon power generated at these farms results in a decrease of 380,000 tons in carbon dioxide emissions a year in relation to the amount of greenhouse gases produced by traditional power plants of similar capacity. The clean power produced by wind turbines with the blades manufactured in Ulyanovsk can meet the needs of 340,000 average-sized households.
Owing to the support provided by the government of the Ulyanovsk Region and to unprecedented measures taken to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus, the production of blades did not cease even in spring 2020, a particularly dangerous period of the pandemic.
The Vestas Manufacturing RUS plant has been increasing its production capacity year-on-year, for instance, in 2020, it increased by 40%. Blades from Ulyanovsk are used as components of Vestas wind turbines on farms of the Wind Energy Development Fund (established, on a parity basis, by RUSNANO JSC and Fortum PJSC) in the Rostov Region and the Republic of Kalmykia. Plans for 2021 include supplying the Fund’s wind farms in the Astrakhan and Rostov Regions.
General Director of Vestas Manufacturing RUS Kimal Yusupov
General Director of Vestas Manufacturing RUS Kimal Yusupov has said “Vestas, together with RUSNANO and local partner manufacturers, is successfully stepping up production in Ulyanovsk. The fact that products made in Russia are of high quality is evidenced by the first ever export delivery to Denmark this year, and by long-term orders for equipment with a combined capacity exceeding 1,800 MW for Russia’s wind power market placed as part of the framework agreement with the Wind Energy Development Fund. We’re confident that our blades can meet the enhanced requirements for localizing equipment manufacturing capacities as part of the second stage of the import substitution program in Russia. During the next phase, aside from fiberglass, composite profiles made using the pultrusion method, resins and other components produced in Russia will be used in the manufacturing process.
RUSNANO Joint-Stock Company was founded in March 2011 through reorganization of state corporation Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies. JSC RUSNANO contributes to implementation of the state policy on the development of the nanotechnology industry by investing directly and through investment funds of nanotechnology in financially effective high-technology projects providing the development of new production facilities in the Russian Federation. Its primary investment focus is in electronics, optoelectronics and telecommunications, healthcare and biotechnology, metallurgy and metalwork, energy, mechanical engineering and instrument making, construction and industrial materials, chemicals and petrochemicals. 100 percent of RUSNANO’s shares are state owned. Thanks to RUSNANO’s investments, there are currently 115 factories and R&D Centers opened in 37 regions in Russia.
Management of assets of RUSNANO JSC is carried out by Limited Liability Company established in December 2013, RUSNANO Management Company. Anatoly Chubais is the Chairman of its Executive Board.
Work to establish nanotechnology infrastructure and carry out educational programs is fulfilled by RUSNANO’s Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs, which was also established during the reorganization of the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies.
