TechnoSpark Has Made Innovative Devices to Make It Easier to Start Oil Pumps

TEN fab (part of the TechnoSpark Group of companies of the RUSNANO’s Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs), the contract manufacturer of mechatronics, robotics, and medical equipment has produced the first series of innovative devices for the discharge of gas from a submersible pump operated in an oil well. Their use makes it easier to restart the pump. The work was commissioned by Oklas Technologies.

The new gas discharge unit works as follows: when an oil pump is stopped, gas builds up in the oil pump and squeezes the pumped liquid into the annulus, which makes it difficult for the pump to start up again. By relieving the gas through the valve, the unit facilitates a restart.

Under the contract, TEN fab has produced eight turnkey gas discharge units (GDU), which will undergo pilot testing (PT) on wells at Tomskneft JSC TNK and Orenburgneft JSC, part of the Rosneft Oil Company system. The device developed by Oklas Technologies has an original design with internal labyrinth channels and a ball valve, it has no analogues in the world, which is confirmed by Russian patent No. 2733345. The GDU is designed for operation in wells with high gas content. In combination with a non-return valve, a new device is used to bypass the gas released when the pump is stopped. This gas accumulates under the check valve and squeezes the reservoir fluid out of the pump, which starts idling without pumping when restarted. Oklas Technologies’ custom-made devices make it easier to restart the pump in a well with high gas content and reduce the risk of equipment breakdown due to gas accumulation. The GDU can also be used in a packer pump arrangement to periodically relieve gas build-up underneath that could cause a stall in the pump supply.
